The Competitive Edge

Claremont Running Team:  For Children Who Love to Run!

By David Brownlee, President

Claremont Running Team (CRT) is a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization, dedicated to instilling in boys and girls a life-long love of running.   Program Membership is open to children, ages 6 - 14.  The Directors, Officers, and I are all non-compensated volunteers.

I helped found Claremont Running Team to give children in Claremont, and the surrounding community, an opportunity to participate in an outstanding running program, to access the many emotional and health benefits of running, and to be able to enjoy racing events as part of a team.  Most of all, my objective is to help foster a lifelong love of running.  Costs for members and participants is kept as low as possible, in an effort to get more children involved.  The average cost of practices is less than $2 day.

I grew up in Claremont, preschool through college, graduating from Condit, El Roble, Claremont High School, and Claremont McKenna College.  As a student, I loved running and participated in track and cross country.  I have 5 children.  Like most of children, at a young age all of them loved to run.  Some still run, yet others eventually focused on other sports, running for pleasure or conditioning.  All of them continue to benefit immeasurably from running at an early age.  Claremont Running Team is a club in which children of varied levels of ability and commitment can join a running program, find their place, and make the most of it.   For those who eventually decide to compete in cross country or track during middle school, high school, or college, Claremont Running Team's programs and events offer them a competitive edge.

Team membership is open all year, and renewals are every September 1.   During the year, members are able to select and pay for only the training programs and racing events in which they will participate.   All children are welcome to join a Claremont Running Team's practice for a free trial.  Just show up at the scheduled practice venue, with a parent/guardian signed Waiver/Release form, and join in.

Parent volunteers are greatly appreciated to assist coaches for one-hours practices and events, or become certified as a coach themselves through the USATF, and elsewhere.  USATF certified and screened assistant coaches are eligible to run with their children
